There are a number of reasons why downsizing to a smaller home is a good idea; it can drastically reduce monthly outgoings, you may be able to release equity in your current home and it reduces your home maintenance burden.

This was the decision facing retired couple Stuart and Margaret Waldman, who wanted to downsize from their large bungalow but still wanted a robust and permanent living solution.

The couple, who are in their late 80s, were keen for an energy efficient, smaller home and to be near family. After much research, they decided that a bespoke one bed Wee House was the perfect solution.

Selling the bungalow to their daughter, Stuart and Margaret kept the land where the former garage lay and asked The Wee House Company to design and build their compact dream home, sized at 3.6m x 11m. The Wee House Company took care of everything; from design, groundworks and planning permission to service installation and interior/exterior painting. What’s more, the petite property was built and delivered in only eight weeks.

The Waldmans’ new home is around four times smaller than their former bungalow however the couple agree they have all the space they need and are delighted with their new home.

Stuart said, “When the building team came to prepare the site they were all so wonderful, patient, kind and understanding; explaining the process to us every step of the way. We were able to have our own ideas incorporated into the build and team’s enthusiasm was great. There was never an ounce of worry that anything would go wrong and we felt very confident everything was in hand. Even when our new Wee House arrived and the massive crane hovered over our former bungalow, we just watched every step in awe at everything going to plan!

It’s perfect. We have a large bedroom, a shower room that’s bigger than our previous bathroom and a living room combined with a kitchen. Our house specifications were agreed with The Wee House Company and are bespoke, made-to-measure, and ideal for our lifestyle. Visitors are amazed at the space and how well finished and stylish our new house is.”
