Jenny and Ewan always planned to purchase a holiday home as an investment but they had a specific idea about the location and house style.
They wanted their holiday home on the banks of Loch Awe; a stunning area in Argyll and the longest freshwater loch in Britain.
Luck was on their side when the perfect loch side plot came up for sale and the couple bought it, excitedly drawing up plans for their investment.
As can often be the case with self builds, the couple ran into difficulties. The site was very steep meaning there was a fair bit of excavation and levelling to be undertaken. The water supply was private, serving the whole of Ardbrecknish, so approval was needed to use it and architectural designs were running amock with the budget.
By the time Jenny and Ewan came to The Wee House Company, they’d had their plot for 10 years and felt they were running out of options.

Jenny explained that they were looking for a specific build type; traditional on the outside and modern on the inside, but they also wanted to use glazing to maximise the view over the loch.
The Wee House Company drew up a plan incorporating double French doors in an open plan living area and adjusted the layout of the house so that both bedrooms faced onto the loch.
Jenny and Ewan were delighted with the plans so The Wee House Company forged ahead, taking care of the planning consent for the holiday cottage.
The Blue Cottage is a holiday let property in Loch Awe, Argyll and has been a phenomenal return on investment for the young couple with peak rate earning them £920 a week. Jenny continued “Last year we had 83% occupancy and this year we are at 76% already. We’re also getting bookings for next year.”
In fact, the couple are so busy with bookings that they sometimes struggle to find time to enjoy the holiday home themselves!
Jenny and Ewan definitely picked the right spot for their Wee House – the fabulous setting and unique appearance of The Blue Cottage has attracted a lot of media attention and has been featured in the Guardian, Scotland on Sunday and Grand Designs Magazine.

“It was a huge relief to come across The Wee House Company, after our previous attempts to build on our plot were hampered by ever-escalating costs. They are a great team to work with as the costs are transparent and they are happy to accommodate any changes that you wish to make to customise the house. The experience was painless as The Wee House Company project managed every aspect of the build- from the planning application to construction – and, most importantly, the house, which we call The Blue Cottage, was completed on the agreed date.”
